GENERAAL MACZEK MEMORIAL BREDA

After landing in Normandy, Polish General Stanislaw Maczek and his division arrived at the city limits of Breda, which they liberated almost without civilian casualties. Soon after, it becomes clear that Poland will fall under the Russian sphere of influence after the war. The Polish troops realize that they will probably never liberate their own country, but Maczek reminds his troops that despite losing their motherland, they still have their honor to fight for. The Poles follow their leader and move on in battle.

NATIONAAL MONUMENT KAMP VUGHT

Camp Vught, also called Konzentrationslager Herzogenbusch, was built in 1943 and was the only SS concentration camp outside of Nazi Germany. In just 18 months, more than 32,000 people were imprisoned here. Often because they were Jewish or because they were in the resistance. The memorial center of National Monument Kamp Vught tells about the origins of the camp and about National Socialism during World War II.

OORLOGSMUSEUM OVERLOON

War belongs in the museum. That is the motto of the War Museum. The Overloon War Museum presents the history of World War II. You can see here how it was possible to reach the point where more than 50 million people lost their lives in five years, but also how the oppressed population resourcefully dealt with constraints and shortages. There is a focus on resistance, as well as persecution. Finally, of course, attention is paid to the liberation, with special focus on the Battle of Overloon.

STICHTING BEVRIJDING BRABANTSE WAL

‘Living in peace and freedom is a great good that cannot be taken for granted. Freedom requires great responsibility from each individual, and peace and freedom must be worked on constantly. Everyone living in the Netherlands must be aware that the achievements surrounding our freedom have required great sacrifices’.

In 2014, at the request of the Bergen op Zoom City Council, an occasional committee organized a variety of activities to commemorate and celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation. The special 2014 program prompted the Bergen op Zoom City Council to ask the Opportunity Committee to continue its work. Almost immediately after the city council’s request, the committee agreed and the thread was picked up. The committee has since been transformed into a foundation and goes by the name: Liberation Foundation Brabantse Wal.

EUROPE REMEMBERS

The years 2019 and 2020 are fast approaching and with this the important momentum of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Europe and the end of the Second World War. The number of living veterans who have fought for our liberation is getting smaller with every passing day and that is why it has never been more important to honor their sacrifice before they pass away.

To mark the important momentum of these anniversary years, numerous commemorations and events will take place across Europe. We expect large numbers of visitors to travel to and within Europe to attend all these anniversary events.
The Liberation Route Europe Foundation, in collaboration with its partners, would like to grasp this opportunity to collectively honor, remember, reflect, and inspire people with an international awareness and remembrance tourism campaign called Europe Remembers 1944-1945.
